Become Part of the Living Record
The United Kingdom coastline is constantly changing.
Harbours evolve. Facilities improve. Local businesses come and go. Moorings change. New generations of boaters discover familiar waters while experienced mariners quietly accumulate knowledge that rarely appears on a chart.
The UK Coastal Operating Guide has been created to preserve that practical knowledge in a form that benefits everyone who plans, navigates or lives afloat around the British coastline.
Its value, however, will never come from one author alone.
It grows stronger through the experience, observations and goodwill of those who know their own stretch of coast better than anyone else.
Who Helps Build the Guide?
People contribute in different ways.
Some represent organisations that support the boating community every day. Others simply possess years of local knowledge gained through working, sailing or living beside the sea.
Both forms of contribution are equally valuable.
โ Coastal Guardians
For marinas, harbours, boatyards, marine engineers, chandlers, sailing clubs, harbour authorities and other maritime organisations.
Coastal Guardians are recognised because they help strengthen the quality and accuracy of information available to visiting boaters.
- Help verify local information
- Advise of significant changes
- Share practical local knowledge
- Support responsible seamanship
- Become recognised within your coastal area
Recognition is based upon contribution rather than advertising.
๐ Coastal Custodians
For liveaboard boaters, cruising sailors, fishermen, harbour volunteers, local residents and others with practical coastal knowledge.
Coastal Custodians help improve the Guide through observation, local experience and constructive feedback.
- Suggest updates
- Share local knowledge
- Highlight changes
- Improve accuracy
- Help preserve Britain's maritime heritage
Every useful contribution strengthens the Guide for future visitors.
What Happens Next?
If you believe in careful seamanship, reliable information and preserving practical coastal knowledge, we would be pleased to hear from you.
There is no membership fee, no advertising package and no obligation.
Every enquiry begins with a conversation about your local area, your experience and how you may wish to contribute.
Where appropriate, organisations may be recognised as Coastal Guardians, while individuals become part of the wider community of Coastal Custodians helping maintain the living record of Britain's coastline.
Our Shared Purpose
We believe practical knowledge should not disappear when a harbour changes, a business retires or an experienced mariner leaves the sea. By working together we can preserve that knowledge, improve it over time and pass it forward to everyone who follows.
One coastline.
Many communities.
One living record.
