The river mist clung low over Hartlebury, and Jack muttered about the tide being “unusually deceptive for April.” I ignored him—Pedro twitched in my pocket, clearly aware that something more unusual than tidal currents was afoot.

We tied up and wandered inland toward the castle, its red sandstone walls looming like an old sentinel. I noticed a faint metallic resonance that didn’t match any obvious source. A bell, perhaps, or the wind through some hidden conduit. Naturally, my curiosity was piqued.

As I stepped closer, the sound sharpened: clear, deliberate, and utterly disembodied. Prudence tried whistling, just in case it was a local trickster, but Jack just frowned, checking every possible reflection or vibration source. “Structural anomaly,” he said, though his voice betrayed doubt.

Dame Twinkles swept past us in dramatic flair, commenting that the bell “must be the toll of a long-forgotten bishop, warning of sins past.” She struck a heroic pose, boots clicking on stone, and I could almost imagine a cathedral choir joining in—though of course there was none.

I edged closer to the bell’s echo and whispered a greeting. The sound shifted, like it was listening, responding—but there was nothing visible. Prudence laughed nervously and suggested we hold a séance, half in jest, half in hope of explanation. Pedro squeaked, apparently agreeing.

Then, as silence returned, the Invisible Partner quietly remarked from nowhere, “The bell rings only when no one is near enough to see its origin.” No one argued. No one needed to.

We left the castle with that unresolved hum following us, a reminder that Hartlebury still holds secrets, and that some things prefer to remain unheard unless you are paying very close attention.
