Boating Skills To Keep You Afloat

Meet Esmeralda Gonzales — Legend of Railway Embankments & Hamster Whisperer

Esmeralda, or “Esmi,” is a naturalist of the highest order with a unique obsession: Pedro, the slightly bewildered hamster. Observed frequently along nationwide railway embankments, she brings chaos, charm, and a strange kind of brilliance to HamstersAHOY!

A Little About Esmi

♦   Expert observer of animals, especially those with fur

♦   Uncanny storytelling skills and literary feats

♦   A knack for turning absurdity into practical insight on marine projects

Esmi and Pedro

According to Esmeralda, every proper vessel needs a small creature of limited competence to absorb bad luck. In our case, Pedro is that creature. While he cannot operate a winch, Esmi ensures he stays at the centre of the team’s moral compass—and occasionally, the comic relief.

The Tincture Shop at Nare Cove

  • West Cornwall

We arrived at Nare Cove with the tide obligingly low and the harbour mouth yawning like an invitation. The little sloop drew up on a shingle spit, oars clinking, boots squelching; gulls argued overhead as if adjudicating our landing. Nare’s cliffs stood mute and flinty, sea-smell sharp enough to sting the nostrils. I had volunteered to go ashore because strange places have a way of choosing me—more often than not, to my misfortune or advantage.

The Light in Hartlebury Castle

They told me not to bother going inland. Something about mud, or tractors, or Jack muttering that “there’s nothing operationally significant about Hartlebury.” Which is exactly the sort of thing that makes a place interesting.

The Whispering Bell of Hartlebury

The river mist clung low over Hartlebury, and Jack muttered about the tide being “unusually deceptive for April.” I ignored him—Pedro twitched in my pocket, clearly aware that something more unusual than tidal currents was afoot.
