HMS Ganges - Hawke Division
Beyond the Annexe lay the main camp of HMS Ganges, where generations of young naval trainees continued their journey from new entry to fully trained sailor. It was a place of tradition, discipline and achievement, where every day followed a demanding routine of divisions, parade, classroom instruction, seamanship, physical training and practical naval skills. From the imposing mast that dominated the skyline to the parade ground, drill sheds, classrooms and messes, every part of the establishment played a role in shaping the character and confidence of those who trained there.
Life in the main camp was both challenging and rewarding. High standards were expected in every aspect of naval life, from immaculate kit and polished boots to teamwork, leadership and personal responsibility. The friendships formed, the shared experiences and the sense of belonging created an enduring bond that many former Ganges boys have carried with them throughout their lives.
This section explores the history, buildings, traditions and daily life of the main camp from the perspective of one ex-Ganges sailor, preserving the memories of one of the Royal Navy's most famous training establishments and the generations who proudly passed through its gates.
