HMS Ganges - The Annexe
For thousands of young recruits arriving at HMS Ganges, the Annexe was their first real experience of Royal Navy life. Separate from the main establishment, this self-contained New Entry Division was where civilian life ended and naval life began. During the first weeks of training, every new entry was issued with uniform, learned the fundamentals of discipline, drill, seamanship, kit preparation and naval routine, while adapting to the high standards expected of a sailor in Her Majesty's Royal Navy.
To generations of Ganges boys, the Annexe represented both apprehension and opportunity. It was here that lifelong friendships were forged, confidence was built, and the transition from bewildered recruit to disciplined naval trainee first took shape. Although remembered for its strict routine, demanding inspections and relentless attention to detail, many former trainees would later recognise the Annexe as the place where the values of teamwork, resilience and self-discipline were first instilled.
This section explores the history, layout and daily life of the Annexe from the perspective of one ex-sailor, preserving the memories of those who passed through its gates and celebrating the unique role it played in the story of HMS Ganges.
