The official record states that the cliffs at Birling Gap are eroding at a measurable rate.

This is correct.

It is also incomplete.

We arrived under clear conditions. Visibility excellent. Sea calm. Wind within expected tolerances.

Pedro immediately declared the cliff edge “temporary infrastructure.”

This was not challenged, as it did not appear worth the effort.

As we walked, I noticed something unusual in the chalk face.

Layers that did not align chronologically.

Older material above newer material.

As though time itself had briefly reconsidered its own direction.

Twinkles pointed it out first, though she did not comment further.

Jack suggested erosion.

Esmeralda suggested tide behaviour.

Pedro suggested nothing, which was the most concerning position of all.

At one point, a section of cliff seemed to “hesitate” before falling away, as though waiting for permission.

It did not receive any.

So it fell anyway.

That evening, Pedro marked the entire area as “under review.”

There is no formal mechanism for cliffs to be under review.

Nevertheless, the designation appears to have persisted.
