Coastal Guardians
Every stretch of coastline has those who know it best.
Not simply because they work there, but because they observe it every day. They understand how conditions change with the weather, where visitors find shelter, what facilities are available, and how the character of a place evolves over time.
The UK Coastal Operating Guide has been created to bring together that practical knowledge in a structured and enduring form for the benefit of liveaboard boaters, cruising sailors and others who value careful coastal planning.
Each of the seventy-five coastal areas within the UK Coastal Operating Guide is intended to become a living record, maintained through responsible observation, local experience and sound seamanship.
Why Coastal Guardians Matter
No coastal archive can remain useful through writing alone.
Harbours develop. Facilities change. Local services improve. Navigation advice evolves. New opportunities appear while others quietly disappear.
For that reason, every coastal area is intended to develop relationships with organisations that share an interest in maintaining accurate, practical and trustworthy information.
Coastal Guardians are recognised because they contribute to the strength of the local maritime community, not because they purchase advertising space.
Their role is to help ensure that information remains relevant, dependable and useful to those planning voyages within their waters.
A Partnership Rather Than an Advertisement
The UK Coastal Operating Guide is not intended to become another advertising directory.
Visitors arrive because they are actively researching a destination, planning a passage or seeking practical coastal knowledge. Trust is therefore the foundation upon which the project is built.
Coastal Guardians are recognised as organisations that help sustain that trust through local knowledge, responsible stewardship and an ongoing commitment to the boating community.
Where appropriate, Coastal Guardians may be identified within their regional section together with information that genuinely assists visiting boaters.
Working Together
A Coastal Guardian may assist by:
- helping to verify local information
- advising of significant changes affecting visiting vessels
- identifying useful local facilities and services
- contributing practical knowledge where appropriate
- encouraging responsible seamanship and safe coastal operation
The editorial independence of the UK Coastal Operating Guide remains unchanged. Information is published for the benefit of the boating community and is presented in a consistent format throughout the United Kingdom coastline.

One Coast, Many Communities
Every harbour has its own identity.
Every estuary has its own character.
Every island, inlet and tidal channel possesses knowledge that cannot be fully appreciated from charts alone.
Coastal Guardians help preserve that knowledge so it can be shared responsibly with those preparing to visit.
Together with Coastal Custodians, local contributors, compilers and the wider UK Coastal Fellowship, they form part of a growing record of the United Kingdom's maritime heritage and present-day coastal life.
An Invitation
If your organisation believes that practical knowledge, responsible seamanship and informed coastal stewardship deserve to be preserved and shared, we would be pleased to discuss how your harbour or maritime business might become a recognised Coastal Guardian for your local coastal area.
The objective is simple: to create the most trusted, comprehensive and enduring coastal knowledge resource for the United Kingdom, one coastal community at a time.

NOTICE TO MARINERS & HARBOUR AUTHORITIES
UK Coastal Archive β Pilot Note No. SP-01
CUSTODIAN CHARTER
Supporting Custodians are recognised not simply for the services they provide, but for their contribution to the living record of the United Kingdom coastline.
This Charter represents a shared commitment between the UK Coastal Operating Guide and those organisations who believe that accurate information, responsible seamanship and local knowledge benefit everyone who ventures to sea.
- To value local knowledge
Practical experience remains one of the coast's greatest assets and deserves to be preserved for future generations. - To encourage responsible seamanship
Information should support sound judgement, careful preparation and safe decision-making, never replace it. - To promote accuracy
Where practical, significant changes affecting visiting boaters should be shared so that published information remains current and reliable. - To support visiting mariners
Every visitor deserves clear information, courtesy and respect, whether arriving for a tide, a night or an entire season. - To strengthen the local maritime community
Harbours, businesses, volunteers and local residents all contribute to the character of a successful coastal destination. - To respect the individuality of every coastal area
Each harbour possesses its own traditions, conditions and identity which form part of the wider story of the United Kingdom coastline. - To encourage thoughtful stewardship
The coastline is not simply used; it is cared for, observed and passed on in better understanding than it was found. - To remain independent
Editorial judgement within the UK Coastal Operating Guide exists solely for the benefit of the boating community and remains independent of commercial interests. - To build lasting relationships
Partnership is founded upon trust, continuity and mutual respect rather than advertising alone. - To leave a positive wake
Every contribution, however small, should make the coast a little easier to understand, a little safer to navigate and a little richer in shared knowledge.
Recognition as a Coastal Guardian or Custodian signifies participation in a shared commitment to preserve, improve and responsibly communicate practical knowledge of the United Kingdom coastline.
The sea belongs to no single organisation.
Its knowledge belongs to everyone willing to observe it with care.
