Wales Icon

Wales offers a predominantly west-facing coastline exposed to the Irish Sea and Atlantic conditions, shaped by strong tidal flows, open bays, and a number of prominent headlands. While parts of the coast provide useful harbour shelter, much of it remains weather-dependent with limited fallback options.

This section is designed for liveaboard and cruising boaters seeking practical, experience-based insight. Each area focuses on real-world operating conditions, including exposure, tidal behaviour, shelter availability, and day-to-day usability afloat.

How to Use This Section

  • Understand coastal exposure and prevailing sea conditions
  • Review tidal patterns and local flow complexity
  • Assess harbour access and availability of shelter
  • Consider shore access and supporting infrastructure
  • Identify key risks before planning movements

Coastal Areas

  • North Wales Coast – Exposed coastline with limited shelter outside harbours, influenced by Irish Sea conditions
  • Anglesey – Complex tidal waters with strong currents (notably Menai Strait) and varied but often constrained shelter
  • Llŷn Peninsula – Remote and exposed headland with few safe refuges, highly dependent on weather windows
  • Cardigan Bay North – Broad open bay with moderate exposure and scattered harbours offering partial shelter
  • Cardigan Bay South – More indented coastline with better harbour access but still subject to Atlantic swell
  • Pembrokeshire North – Rugged and highly exposed coast with strong tides and limited all-weather shelter
  • Pembrokeshire South – Better protected than the north, with key harbours providing more reliable access and refuge
  • Carmarthenshire Coast – Shallow, estuarine coastline with significant tidal range and shifting sandbanks
  • Swansea Bay & Gower – Large tidal bay with exposed stretches offset by a small number of marina and harbour options
  • Vale of Glamorgan Coast – Generally exposed coastline with few access points and limited natural shelter

At a Glance

  • Most Exposed: Llŷn Peninsula, Pembrokeshire North
  • Strongest Tidal Flows: Around Anglesey and headland areas
  • Best Shelter: Pembrokeshire South and selected harbour locations
  • Shallow & Complex Waters: Carmarthenshire Coast and estuarine areas
  • Most Weather-Dependent: Open bay and headland sections across the west coast

Who This Is For

  • Liveaboard and cruising boaters
  • Coastal passage planning along the Welsh coast
  • Understanding regional constraints and shelter availability

This is part of an evolving coastal index. Content will continue to develop based on direct experience and contributions, with a focus on practical usability rather than completeness.
